Since November 2024, I have been working with Colombia’s National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) and the National Authority for Aquaculture and Fisheries (AUNAP) to build the image bank for the country’s first official Census of Artisanal and Subsistence Fishers. This groundbreaking initiative, led by a government agency, aims to statistically recognize and bring visibility to the fishing sector—a vital part of Colombia’s cultural, economic, and nutritional fabric. It has been a deeply enriching experience to travel across the country, spend time with diverse fishing communities—from rivers and marshes to coastal and marine areas—and to document, through photography, the dignity, complexity, and richness of this way of life.
